The Jenny Beth Show

Surviving Communism: The Biggest Lie Is That You Will Own the Factories | Panel

Episode Summary

Surviving Communism, part four: the socialists promise you will own the factories, and a survivor from Nicaragua calls it the biggest lie they tell. Jenny Beth Martin reads the Democratic Socialists of America's program for delivering its promises to six people who grew up under governments that delivered them: public ownership of the largest corporations and essential industries, publicly owned housing, and a new constitution that abolishes the Senate, the Electoral College, the police, prisons, and ICE. The answers are concrete. Ovidiu Frusina, a mechanical engineer from Nicolae Ceausescu's Romania, describes the no-debt, no-mortgage life: seven people in 500 square feet, the state as landlord, the lights cut at nine, and a pension of a few dollars a month. Manuela Callini remembers two hours of electricity a day and the government deciding by license plate which days you could drive. Dr. Yuri Yarim-Agaev, Soviet physicist and Moscow Helsinki Group dissident, explains why educated people keep believing a central plan can beat a market. Agnes Gibboney, founder of Angel Families of America, tells what communism took from her family in Hungary, then answers her 14-year-old grandson, who thinks New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has good ideas. Sasha Gong, former China director at Voice of America, shows what a cashless state does to a dissident's bank account. Captain Onofre Gutierrez of Nicaragua asks the question the program never answers: how much of Tesla would be yours, and who runs it the day after?
