The Democratic Socialists of America published a national program this summer, and Jenny Beth Martin pulls it up and reads it out loud, line by line, in this episode. The Democratic Socialists of America ask you to imagine a future without capitalism: no debt, no bills, no health insurance, no mortgage, no landlord, publicly funded retirement, and food, education, energy, medicine and transportation converted from businesses into common goods and utilities. Jenny Beth stops on each promise and asks the question the program never answers. If nobody has a house payment, who owns the house? If the grocery store belongs to the government, who decides how much food you get, and what kind? If the thermostat is a public utility, who sets it at 68 or 78? It is described as a modern day utopia. She calls it what it actually is. She also walks through the rest of the program: abolish the United States Senate, put the presidency underneath an empowered House of Representatives, pack or eliminate the Supreme Court, end the Electoral College, abolish ICE, and defund and eventually abolish the police and the prison system. Then she makes the case for why this is a voting question and not a debating question, with 48 days left before Election Day, and lays out 10 concrete things any citizen can do this week.
